Why Does my 5d mark II always break?

Why does my 5d mark II always break? Today was the second time in the last 6 months... The first time, i was 1 month into a 2 month tour of africa. The shutter stuck with err 99 or something. Well, i spent 1 month travelling through botswana namibia and south africa without taking pictures and boy was that an opportunity missed... Then i got home, and it cost me 800 dollars to get it repaired AND it took over a month.

5 months later i was by granville island tonight ready to take a pano of vancouver in the beautiful light and i turned my camera off to set up my tripod, and then it never came back... Changed batteries, and lenses and memory cards. The 2 hours of driving back and forth to my home was a bit less of a loss then the 1 month in africa, but... Come on! This is ridiculous now! First of all i am terrified of how much it will probably cost to get it fixed this time... and second i am supposed to be flying to asia for 3 months of backpacking in 9 days! What now?

I just cant believe i have to deal with this crap again. Its so disappointing that the one nice thing i bought for my self (my camera costs more than my car), is a piece of shit. And the people I trusted to make it right in the first place, are not interested at all in making it better. Oh, and when they fix it... There is only a 3 month warranty on the repair, because in the real world when you fix something for somebody, it should only be expected to work for 3 months.

What a joke

had mine since it was released, never had a problem. you may just have the unfortunate "lemon" and/or bad luck.

Also, IMO, if i were on a big trip, i'd bring a backup.

+1 what aVison said, bring a back up if its a big trip… Humidity might of screwed you over the first time in africa...perhaps get a camera body that has proper weather sealing…the 5d2 has some weather sealing, but isnt anything compared to the 1d series. If your not looking to spend a lot grab a 1Ds Mk2n…run you half the price of the 5d2 and have great weather sealing keeping the mosture out from africa, china, or wherever you might be going….

You need to quit dropping your camera... Canon has a flat-rate repair charge for the 5D Mark II, so it wouldn't have cost you more than about $300 to repair anything - except impact or water damage.

Interesting discussion and I feel for the original poster. But things do break or malfunction - just unfortunate.

Did you take your camera to VanCam or Camtex? They rape you up the butthole on repairs... i'd just send it into canon to get it fixed. Sent my 1D there to get a new shutter and it only cost $350 shipped and took about a month. It's my back up camera so wasn't such a big deal.

Plus.. if you bought your 5d2 brand new and it broke after 6 months, shouldn't that be covered under warranty?

I definitely tell you that no, in market you can found lots of amazing cameras with great facilities or 1 year warranty as well. So, frankly speaking dump that one camera and purchase a new one.

Having just read a couple of your posts, and now this one, I've come to the conclusion you know absolutely nothing about what you're talking about. Your information is useless and your opinion is baseless. Please educate yourself on what you're offering as advice to others, or quit trolling camera forums with useless advice.
